Now, I will admit I was late to the party on this one. But what an underrated anime! The big animes, right now, are Demon Hunter and My Hero Academia, but while browsing through Netflix I stumbled on this gem, The Seven Deadly Sins.
The story takes place in a world consisting of humans, fairies, giants, demons and gods. The world is constantly under threat of demons and when the Arthinian kingdom of Leonis is threatened to be taken over from the inside by the once good, Holy Knights, the only people who can save the world are the once Holy Knights, Seven Deadly Sins. The Sins consist of the leader Meliodas (the Dragon Sin of Wrath), Diana (the Serpent Sin of Envy), Ban (the Fox Sin of Greed), King (the Bear Sin of Sloth), Gowther (the Goat Sin of Lust), Merlin (the Boar Sin of Gluttony) and Escanor (the Lion Sin of Pride).
The first season is entertaining enough. It is very light-hearted and fun and definitely a shonen if there ever was one. The first season begins with a Princess Elizabeth looking for the Sins and stumbling across Meliodas. Together they set off on an adventure to find the other Sins and clear their names.
The second season is incredible though. Seasons 2 and 3 build on all the characters. As opposed to having one-dimensional characters such as just a fun loving Meliodas and the other sins, they start to face their pasts. The series starts to take a much darker tone, though it is well hidden and one only realises this when they think about it.
Meliodas, as a lead, is incredible, going from funny and never serious to us discovering why and how, when he is truly angry, he cannot control himself. The female lead, Elizabeth, is initially there more for fan service and a romantic interest than anything else but, from the first few episodes of season 4, becomes a badass woman who is now worth watching as she grows.
The supporting Sins are equally incredible characters. Each with their own background and personality traits that make the show fantastic and the characters relatable, all except for Escanor, who is essentially a god and who is just there to be a badass but is so big a badass you won't mind his one-dimensioness.
While being an anime shonen, this is a show that is in no way for children. With the character arcs and the themes and scenes, this anime this is more for adults.
The main problem, for me, is that the power scaling is non-existent. If you have ever seen Dragon Ball and tried to follow who is the strongest, this is far worse. Meliodas will be the strongest for a few episodes, then a random guy we have not been introduced to will be the strongest for ten minutes then on to the next random individual.
That being said, this is still a great anime to go and check out, whether new to the anime world or a veteran of the art.
