New Girl

Ok, yes, I am very late to the party on this one, but I needed to replace the absence of Modern Family, especially now that it has been confirmed that season 11 will be its last and that I haven’t got the chance to work on it. Disappointing, I know! So, I finally watched New Girl, however sceptic I was about watching the series with a title like that.

New Girl is a story about a girl named Jess, played by Zooey Deschanel, who needs to find a place to live as her boyfriend cheated on her. She finds a new place and gets three roommates in the form of Nick Miller, Schmidt and Winston. And boy do they have some crazy adventures trying to just get by.

Now, to begin with, I had no idea what the appeal of this series was, I mean it isn’t badly shot, the acting is acceptable and the character work is alright, but I could not understand how this show has such a cult following. But after several episodes, I’ve discovered it is because it is so relatable as we all know people who are exactly like each of the characters. For example, I have a friend who means well but pays a lot into the douche jar.

Like I said camera work is nothing special. It is shot with a similar style to other sitcoms like Big Bang Theory, however the editing is actually pretty good.

The acting is pretty good too, in that you can see that all the actors are having fun and it comes through into the show and just makes the show that much more enjoyable. The actors are clearly passionate about what they are doing and makes it a privilege to watch them in action.

The character work across all the seasons is okay. I would say the characters grow more in the first few seasons than in the later ones, once they have all coupled up.

This was a fun show, and definitely worth a watch if you need a pick me up. I would happily recommend this to a friend.

Overall Rating: 7.7/10
