My Neighbor Totoro

This movie came highly recommended by a friend, and my girlfriend has a giant plushie of the title character, Totoro, so I thought why not.

My Neighbor Totoro is an anime film that was released in 1988, by director Hayao Miyazaki. Two girls, Mei and Satsuki, move to a new town where they soon come across and befriend a large, rabbit-like creature, called Totoro.

First thing I thought when I started watching it was that it has a Heidi-old-Afrikaans-series kind of feel to it. It is a really cute, sweet anime, showing the innocence of children.

While there is not a lot of character arcs, there is still a deeper story of a father trying to take care of his family while his wife is in hospital. It is a movie that is quite easy to sit back and smile and laugh through.

The music is awesome and adds to what you are watching by creating an emotional investment where you begin to care what happens to two little girls and their parents.

The animation itself is incredibly good for a film from 1988 and would still hold up to modern times. I would liken the animation to that of Wolf Children.

Overall, I loved this film. It is family-friendly and will leave you with the warm fuzzy feeling one gets when you are truly happy. I can certainly see why this is a classic anime film.

Overall Rating: 8.2/10

Recommended for: Families and people just want to watch a happy film and feel good about themselves and life.
