My Top 10 WWE Greatest Matches

Writer's picture: Caleb McClartyCaleb McClarty

If I am honest this list was hard to come up with. There are so many amazing matches out there when it comes to WWE, but here are my picks for the best WWE matches out there.

10) Edge and Christian vs Dudley Boyz vs the Hardys (Wrestlemania 17)

We are starting off with an awesome one. This match took place at Wrestlemania 17 with some of the greatest in-ring performers of their era. Edge jumping off a ladder and spearing Jeff Hardy in the air before both plummet to the floor is an iconic piece of wrestling history. The match was a TLC (Tables, Ladders and Chairs) so there are some incredibly dangerous and gruesome spots. Edge and Christian won the match but this match defined and created some of the people in this match and most definitely left an impression on the WWE Universe.

9) John Cena vs CM Punk (Money in the Bank 2011)

Now this one was more for the story than the actual match. While the match itself was incredible, being given a 5 star by Dave Meltzer, CM Punk and the leader of the Cenation genuinely seemed like they hated each other, and this was a time right as everyone was beginning to love CM Punk. The promos made it seem like there was no love lost between these two at all.

7) Brett Hart vs Owen Hart (Wrestlemania 10)

Taking place at Wrestlemania 10, this was an amazing fight. The work rate of both of these stars was incredible and anyone who says they saw Owen Hart beating his brother Brett Hart, is a liar. But win he did. This match, however, put Brett in the correct place to replace Hulk Hogan with technique and skills. A beautiful match that showcases some amazing technical work and storytelling as Owen tries anything to win and then wins with a rollup pin. This match proved the Harts were an incredible wrestling family and created a dynasty.

6) Shawn Michaels vs Ric Flair (Wresltemania 24)

This match was incredibly emotional, with Flair putting his career on the line. This was to be Ric Flair's last match in the company against one of the greatest of all time and his good friend. Everyone knew that Shawn would retire Flair but no one was ready for how it would end. This was an insane match considering Flair was 59 years old and somehow competed for 20 minutes. The ending saw Flair standing proud telling Shawn to end it, Shawn told him, "I'm sorry, I love you", and hitting him with the Sweet Chin Music, ending Flair's career. I am going to ignore the fact Flair wrestled at TNA not too long after that. Flair left the arena to a well-deserved standing ovation.

5) The Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania 25)

This actually hurts me to put it here. This match was the highlight of Wrestlemania 25. Shawn was an incredible competitor and flew around the ring as only he can and Undertaker somehow moving as a man possessed, especially considering his size. The storytelling was excellent and it had you on the edge of your seat knowing that if Shawn won, he would have cemented his legacy as Mr Wrestlemania and the streak would be over.

4) Brett Hart vs Stone Cold Steve Austin (Wrestlemania 13)

This is the perfect example of how a slow build-up can pay off. Ending with a double turn, Hart became a heel (bad guy) and the Rattlesnake (becoming a face). It also holds the iconic scene of Stone Cold bleeding out as Brett applies a Sharp Shooter without mercy. Brett won, but Stone Cold was impressive especially considering it was a submission match, and Austin has no submissions.

3) Undertaker versus Triple H (Wrestlemania 28)

The first match between the two was good, but the second was amazing, with Shawn Michaels, Triple H's best friend, getting involved for revenge when the Undertaker retired him in two Wrestlemanias ago. Watching these two massive men out for blood. Michaels was the special guest referee, inside Hell in a Cell. This match was truly epic. Somehow after being hit with Sweet Chin Music by Michaels and a Pedigree by Triple H, Taker kicked out and the look on Michaels’ face said he knew he had just tried to screw the devil and got caught. Taker took the win after Tombstoning Triple H, however, the stunning ending saw all three men walk to the back arm-in-arm as the End of an Era.

2) Undertaker versus Mick Foley (King of the Ring 1998)

Yes, this the third Undertaker match in the top 5, but it's my list, so... The match took place in a Hell in a Cell and was incredibly gruesome, including a moment where we thought Mick Foley, the most mental wrestler ever, was dead TWICE! First Taker threw Mankind off the cell to, what looked like and must have felt like, Hell itself. Then Taker chokeslammed Foley through the cell where the landing is audible, and Foley lies unconscious.

1) The Rock versus Stone Cold Steve Austin (Wrestlemania 19)

This was an incredible match. Rock and Austin had faced each other twice at Wrestlemania, but both times Austin beat the Rock. The Rock finally beat his old, and probably greatest, rival after hitting him with three Rock Bottoms and pinning him. It was truly amazing as it was also Stone Cold's last match. It was incredible watching two of the greatest of their era battle it out and befitting that the Rock was the one to retire the Rattlesnake and that Stone Cold has never competed since.
