Capone

Writer's picture: Caleb McClartyCaleb McClarty

I have been looking forward to watching this film. Capone is a mixture of one of the greatest Mafia bosses of all time and an incredible actor, Tom Hardy, portraying him. What could go wrong?

Capone takes place after his release from jail for tax evasion. Capone is on his last legs and is a biographic film dealing with his last year on earth as he is no longer deemed a threat as his mind rots away with neurosyphilis.

This was a slow film but is incredibly well shot. The camera work was great and has a Godfather feel to it.

The story is very confusing but is done so artistically and with intention as it shows his slow descent into madness. Tom Hardy does an amazing portrayal of Al Capone.

This leads us to the next point, the acting. The acting is alright, nothing too astounding, Tom Hardy, however, shines in the same way he did in Legend. The voice does become very grainy and get on one's nerves eventually but goes a long way to show his mental issues and the fact the man saw many brutal things he should not have, and what happens with the PTSD as a result.

The music does fall by the wayside. One does not notice the change in music too much.

Overall, this is not a film for everyone in the slightest. If you enjoy good Mafia films, that are shot well and are artistic in the portrayal of a character’s mental state, then I highly recommend it, but if you are looking for skop, skiet en donder, rather go rewatch Terminator.

Overall Rating: 5.7/10

Recommended for: Mafia and artistic film fanatics
