The Gentlemen

Welcome back, Matthew McConaughey!

McConaughey has had a recent slew of bad films, for example, the Beach Bum and you love your eyes don't watch it! However, his newest film The Gentlemen, brings back a career that started looking like it was dead in the water.

The Gentlemen is about a wealthy marijuana dealer, Micky Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) who is trying to sell off his very profitable business. This causes many shady characters to try and steal his business by any means necessary. Together with his wife, Rosalind Pearson (Michelle Dockery) and his right-hand man, Ray (Charlie Hunnam), they work to fix any and all problems that come their way. From blackmailers and bribes to a way-too-ambitious reporter (Hugh Grant).

The camerawork is stunning, as we should expect from a legendary director such as Guy Ritchie and goes a long way to make the film feel more professional. Camerawork, dialogue and music all add to creating an all-enveloping story.

The story is incredibly written and stands out when considering all the atrocious films of drug cartels out there. The characters are relatable even as criminals and are shown to have more than one dimension or character trait right down to the smallest role.

The acting is superlative, with an ensemble cast who have been matched to the perfect roles. Some of the actors and actresses in the film are Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Golden Globe winner Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Golden Globe winner Collin Farrell (The Lobster) and Golden Globe winner, Hugh Grant (Notting Hill) to just name a few.

The main problems, albeit only two, are that the film does lull in a few scenes and loses a little momentum. That being said, it is a microscopic bit of momentum and the film stills chugs along satisfactorily. There is also an unbelievably high amount of cursing and, while I have no issue with it, there are people who will see this as a problem.

Overall, it is an incredible film and any cinephile needs to watch this! It is a very good way to enjoy a couple of hours. While I can, with absolute certainty, recommend this for adults, make sure the kids are not watching.

Overall Rating: 8/10

Recommended for: Fans of Criminal Organisation films, any Cinephiles and just fans of great cinema.
