A man, Norman Kay, sits on a chair next to the bed of a dying man. Norman Kay reads some Biblical scriptures to the man. The man’s name is Wesley Dodes but is better known as Sandman. His power is the ability to dream a criminal’s crime before it is committed. Wesley is having visions of the world ending. He cannot see the full vision but knows that the end will be to the superhero civil war.
Norman starts to describe the current world. The superheroes of old, Batman, Superman and Green Lantern have hung up their capes and a new breed of superheroes have taken their place. These new “heroes” not only fight villains but each other not caring for civilian casualties.
The Specter visits Norman and asks him to help decide which heroes should live and which should die. Specter reveals that 10 years ago the Joker killed 93 people at the Daily Planet including Lois Lane. Joker was apprehended but on the day of his trial he was killed by a hero known as Magog. Humans, rather than demanding justice, praised Magog for doing what needed to be done. Superman, realising that humans now wanted to cast aside justice and embrace vigilantism, hung up his cape. Following suit Aquaman, Green Lantern and many others disappeared to a life of solitude.
A group of heroes and villains fight on a bridge. Superman suddenly appears, he has returned to restore order to this chaotic world. Wonder Woman had approached Superman, asking him to return, showing him the excessive violence Magog and his forces used in a battle with some villains. The excessive violence resulted in the destruction of Kansas and its surrounding states.
Back in the present, Superman rallies the superheroes of old to take down Magog and his reign of terror. Amongst the heroes are The Flash, Green Lantern and Hawkman, to name a few. However, it is very noticeable that Batman is missing.
Bruce in the ruins of Wayne Manor, talks with Superman. Bruce explains that the Manor was attacked by Bane and Two-Face after all the heroes had gone into retirement. Jails like Arkham and Blackgate were destroyed with all the occupants being freed or killed in the process. Superman tries to enlist Bruce, which he declines, saying Clark had left the new heroes to become feral and did not teach them the true meaning of being a hero. Now with his return, violence will only increase as Superman will enforce his will on other heroes. Bruce explains Superman needs to take a more diplomatic role.
Superman tries his best to enlist as many heroes as possible, both new and old while Batman starts his own team. Superman starts forcing heroes to join the Justice League, even through force. All heroes who do not join are placed in a massive prison, in Kansas, until there are more prisoners than free heroes.
Batman and his team ally themselves with the once nefarious Lex Luthor, to create a robot army to quell all superhuman activity on earth.
Batman and Superman’s conflict approaches climax, as a riot breaks out in the Kansas prison. The Justice League arrives on the scene first to restore order, but they are soon stopped by Shazam.
Norman and the Specter watch this epic clash between Shazam and the Man of Steel. Norman starts to understand the end of the world and that Superman fails to grasp that leadership needs both diplomacy and force. Magog’s forces are not evil, but lack discipline as the line between justice and vigilantism became more blurred. The new heroes have no other role models to follow.
Batman and his team join the battle as humanity plans to nuke the site.
The Specter asks Norman who to judge. If the heroes stop the bomb, their war will destroy the earth. If they don’t humanity will survive but all the heroes will be dead. Norman is asked to choose a side, humanity or superhumans.
Superman and Shazam stop fighting as Superman gives Shazam an ultimatum. He can either kill Superman allowing the bomb to kill the heroes or allow Superman to stop the bomb. Instead Shazam incapacitates Superman and stops the bomb himself, sacrificing himself for the greater good.
In the aftermath, a furious Superman arrives at the United Nations with intent on punishing them for the decision to kill so many people. Norman arrives before Superman can to talk some sense into him, stating that Clark had allowed the grief of Lois’ death and humanity’s mistakes to drive him away. Somewhere along the line, Superman forgot that all life is valuable and that this will create a greater peace.
This leads to the supers and humans working together towards a common good.
Superman visits a grave site. Diana, Wonder Woman, visits him. She has become a teacher, training heroes in the correct path. She has been crowned queen. She gives him a gift. He opens it, it’s his glasses. He puts them on and kisses her.
Norman asks the Specter who should be punished now that everything has been revealed. Specter states that none need suffer after all that has happened. Specter says goodbye and tells Norman to keep hope.
Norman preaches to a crowd about what he had witnessed.
One year later, two people go to a superhero-styled restaurant. A man dressed up as Superman greets them. A large man judges the costumes, before the woman tells him “Be nice, Clark.” These two people are Clark Kent, better known as Superman and Diana, better known as Wonder Woman. Then “Superman” takes them to their seats. Bruce Wayne, better known as Batman, finally joins them.
A “Robin” waitress comes over to the table to ask them for their order. They order and she leaves. Both Bruce and Clark are disgusted by the place, but Diana says she was curious. The waitress brings them their drinks. Diana says she has some news to share but first leads them in a toast to past friends.
They order food. They start making small talk as they enjoy their lunch. Bruce’s steak is not cooked correctly so Clark heats it up with his heat vision. Finally, Diana says she has something to announce with Clark. Bruce says she is pregnant. Clark and Diana are shocked, Bruce states for an Amazon whose physic never changes she has put on a pound or two and she is positively glowing. Bruce congratulates them. Diana asks Bruce to be their child’s god father. Bruce is shocked as his record as a parent isn’t spotless. Bruce accepts and embraces both of them. They get up to leave as Batman states they have just handed him influence over the most powerful child in the world. They leave.
