Onward is the latest addition to the evergrowing collection of Disney films. The story is about a world that has forgotten about magic, but on our protagonist's, Ian Lightfoot, sixteenth birthday, he is given a magic staff and Pheonix gem to resurrect the father he has never seen before for only one day, but something goes wrong and the gem is destroyed, leaving only the father's legs. Together with his older brother, Burly, voiced by the talented Chris Pratt, they set out on an adventure to find another Pheonix gem to resurrect their father before "tomorrow's sun has set".
Overall the animation is very good, as we have always come to expect from Disney and Pixar. They have a good sense of creating an engaging world, and Tom Holland(Ian Lightfoot) and Chris Pratt(Burly Lightfoot) really shine as the leads.
The story is really well written and shows that there is some creativity coming out of Disney despite the constant remaking of their greatest hits of which they somehow make worse.
The world is filled to the brim with many colourful characters. Disney makes sure that one can relate to their characters. Whether it be a family broken by the death of a parental figure and coming to terms with their death. To a manticore who has given up on her dreams to just be able to live and get by in the world.
The main problem is that throughout the film they do not have a sense of urgency up until the very end and that while it is an amazing film it is not as captivating as Disney's other films like Frozen 2 or the Lion King, not that bloody awful remake the original.
This is still a really good film and is worth the watch if you want to sit down and just watch a good family film.
Overall Rating: 7/10
